Bringing Home a Dog? Keep Them Safe & Sound

Bringing home a dog is one of life’s happiest moments. It’s exciting, joyful, and full of love—but it also brings new responsibilities. At Home for Good Dog Rescue, we’ve seen that dogs often need time to adjust to a new home. During this period, even a small distraction can lead to an accidental escape. These simple safety tips will help keep your new companion safe and secure.

  • Doors & Exits
Always leash or secure your dog before opening any door or gate. It takes only a second for a curious dog to slip out. Using a “double barrier,” like a baby gate or pen, adds an extra layer of safety and helps prevent door-dashing.

  • Cars & Travel
Car rides can be fun, but they can also be risky. Before opening a car door, make sure your dog is in a crate or wearing a secure harness. Never let your dog exit the vehicle off-leash—new sights or sounds can make even calm dogs bolt.

  • Yards & Fences
Regularly check your yard for gaps or weak spots in the fence. Lock all gates and remove anything nearby that your dog could climb on. Taking a few minutes to inspect the area can prevent escape attempts before they happen.

  • ID, Microchips & Tracking
Make sure your dog’s ID tags are current and their microchip has up-to-date contact information. You can also use a GPS tracker such as an AirTag for extra security. If your dog came from Home for Good Dog Rescue with an AirTag, please keep it on and charged. These steps make it much easier to reunite with your dog if they ever get lost.

  • If a Dog Gets Out
If your foster or adopted dog ever gets loose, contact Home for Good Dog Rescue right away. Our team will take quick action and post to neighborhood and community groups to try to help bring your dog home safely.
