A Home for Now: Our Dog Foster Program in New Jersey
Our dog foster program in New Jersey has a new name — and a new mission. We are calling it A Home for Now, and it exists because thousands of dogs across this country are running out of time. Chances are you have already seen it on our social media — and honestly, it is everywhere right now. Shelters at capacity. Rescues sounding the alarm. Dogs waiting in overcrowded kennels with nowhere to go. Nationally, more animals are coming into shelters than going out. This crisis has been weighing on us. So we went back to the drawing board and reimagined everything.
The old barriers to fostering — too complicated, too expensive, too overwhelming for a first-timer — should not exist anymore. Not here. Not with us.
Here is what fostering with Home for Good Dogs Rescue actually looks like.
How A Home for Now Works
The need is real, it is widespread, and it is growing. Built to be the solution, A Home for Now exists because every dog deserves somewhere to land while they wait for their forever family. Four things make it different.
Shorter commitment. Fostering does not have to be open ended. A Home for Now offers flexible windows that fit your life and your schedule — because a little time from you means everything to a dog in need.
Full onboarding and training. Before a dog ever comes through your door, we walk you through everything. Thanks to our volunteer onboarding process, you will know exactly what to expect, what to do, and how to handle anything that comes up. By the time your foster dog arrives, you are prepared.
We provide everything. Food, preventatives, and supplies — every single thing a foster dog needs comes from Home for Good Dogs Rescue. All you bring is the home and the love. Beyond that, there is no financial burden on our foster families.
Always on support. Throughout the entire duration of your foster, our team is a text or an email away — because nobody in the A Home for Now program does this alone.
Why It Matters Right Now
Beyond our borders, dogs are waiting in South Carolina right now — ready to come to New Jersey, ready to meet their people, ready to start the next chapter. Even with millions of dogs adopted nationwide each year, thousands are still waiting for loving homes. Transport rescues like ours bridge that gap, but not a single dog can board a transport without a foster home waiting on the other side.
That is where you come in.
Is Fostering Right for You?
Many people assume fostering is not an option for their lifestyle. Most of the time, they are wrong. Below are the concerns we hear most often — and the truth behind each one.
Already have a dog? Many of our best foster families have resident pets. Together, we find a foster dog that is a great fit for your household — compatibility matters to us as much as it matters to you.
Renting your home? Renters foster with us successfully all the time. Generally speaking, if your lease permits pets, fostering is typically covered — and when in doubt, a quick conversation with your landlord is all it takes.
Traveling for work? Flexible by design, A Home for Now works around your schedule and finds placement windows that make sense for your life. Occasional travel does not have to be a dealbreaker.
Worried about getting too attached? This is the one we hear most — and honestly, it means you are exactly the kind of person a foster dog needs. Saying goodbye is hard, and yet foster families will tell you it gets easier over time. More than that, they will tell you that watching a dog find their forever family makes every moment worth it.
Still on the fence? Reach out — our foster coordinator is happy to talk it through before you commit to anything.
What to Expect When You Foster With Us
Fostering with Home for Good Dogs Rescue is a straightforward process from start to finish. After completing your application at HomeForGoodDogs.org, our team reaches out to learn more about your home and lifestyle. Together we find the right dog for your situation, and before your foster arrives, our onboarding walks you through everything you need to know. From that point forward, your placement begins — with our team available every single day of it.
When your foster dog finds their forever family, you will be the first to know. Some foster families come back for another placement right away, while others need a little time. Either way is completely fine — no pressure, no obligation. You give what you can, when you can. That is the A Home for Now promise.

About Home for Good Dogs Rescue
Home for Good Dogs Rescue is a 100% foster-based nonprofit rescue organization serving New Jersey. Partnering with overwhelmed shelters in South Carolina, we transport dogs north and place them in loving foster homes across the state while they await adoption. Unlike traditional rescues, we have no physical shelter — because every dog in our program deserves a real home while they wait for their home for good. Behind every placement is a community of foster families, dedicated volunteers, and passionate adopters who make it all possible.
